The History of Fagersta and the Company Fagersta Bruk

In 1944, the Fagersta factory community was melded to Västanfors village to create a city named Fagersta. But the area’s history is longer than that by far – iron working in the three iron mills called Semla, Fagersta and Västanfors dates to the early 1600s.

Four companies took over after Fagersta Bruk AB´s demise.
SECO - Seco Tools AB - makes hard metal cutting tools for turning, milling and drilling.

Fagersta Stainless
- Fagersta Stainless AB - makes stainless rod wire and drawn wire.

Atlas Copco - Atlas Copco Secoroc AB - Atlas Copco Secoroc develops, manufactures and markets rock drilling tools, and has established a world-wide leading position. The products are used for rock excavation within the mining and construction business for both surface and underground applications. The division headquarter and main production plant are located in Fagersta.

Outokumpu - OUTOKUMPU Stainless Tubular Products AB
Outokumpu Stainless Tubular Products manufactures welded stainless pipe and pipe accessories. The Fagersta plant develops, makes and sells pipe for equipment makers, the foodstuffs industry, pharmaceutical companies and water pipes for the construction industry.

In addition to the companies named, each a world leader in their field, there is a host of skilled entrepreneurs. Here in Fagersta the focus is on developing both new and established firms.

The Sports Movement

The many factory towns in the Bergslagen mining area became sports interested early. Sports became a folk movement with many types of sports drawing in the entire community. Team sports like football (soccer), bandy and ice hockey dominated, nurturing such great ice hockey champions as Thomas Sandström and Ulf Samuelsson. Västanfors IF won the Swedish Championships in bandy in 1954.
